Beginner's Guide to Watering Exotic Plants (Without Overwatering!)

One of the most common mistakes new plant parents make? Overwatering. It's actually easier to kill a plant with too much love than too little. Here's how to get it right.

The Golden Rule: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry — not on a fixed schedule.

Tips by plant type:

  • Aroids (Monsteras, Philodendrons): Allow soil to partially dry between waterings. They like moisture but hate soggy roots.

  • Hoyas: Let the soil dry out almost completely before watering again.

  • Alocasias: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Use well-draining soil.

Signs you're overwatering: yellowing leaves, mushy stems, or a musty smell from the soil.

Signs you're underwatering: drooping, dry/crispy leaf edges, or very light soil.

When in doubt, wait a day or two before watering. Your plants will thank you! Have questions about a specific plant? Reach out to us at Grateful Gardens — we love helping plant parents thrive. 🌱
